Systemism vs. DJ Systemism: A Completely Unnecessary Debate I Somehow Ended Up Writing About

By DJ Buddy Holly (David Charles Kramer)

Every once in a while, DJ culture forces you into situations you never expected. Some DJs get surprise B2Bs. Some discover their USB is formatted FAT32 at the worst possible moment. And then there’s me — apparently destined to write an article about the difference between Systemism and DJ Systemism.

A sentence that absolutely should not exist. Yet here we are.

πŸŽ›️ Why “Systemism” Exists (Blame Turntablism and Controllerism)

Let’s be honest: nobody needs to add “‑ism” to anything. There is no DJ Terminology Council demanding suffixes. But after twenty years of saying:

  • turntablism

  • controllerism

  • turntablist

  • controllerist

…my brain now automatically adds “‑ism” to anything that stays still long enough.

Standalone all‑in‑one DJ systems showed up, and my mouth just went:

“Systemism.”

And my brain said, “Well, that’s canon now.”

It’s not homage. It’s not academic. It’s just a habit — a linguistic reflex developed from too many late‑night gear conversations.

🎚️ Why I’m Not Calling Myself the Godfather of Systemism

Let’s clear this up immediately: I am not the Godfather of Systemism.

First, because it sounds like I’m announcing myself as a fascist mob boss in a dystopian sci‑fi world government:

“In the year 2089, the Godfather of Systemism ruled the Nine Sectors with an iron jog wheel…”

No thank you.

Second, I’m not the founder of anything. Standalone DJs have been out here doing their thing long before I typed a single word.

People like:

  • Carl Cox — using standalone systems in streams and practice

  • Roger Sanchez — demoing all‑in‑ones

  • Louie Vega — using them for studio mixes

  • DJ Jazzy Jeff — practicing and creating content on them

  • DJ E‑Clyps — early showcases

  • DJ El Figo — comparison demos

  • Multiple Pioneer/AlphaTheta ambassadors — using the XDJ‑AZ in livestreams and showcases

These folks didn’t wait for me to name anything. They just plugged in and played.

So no — I’m not the Godfather, Founder, High Priest, or Supreme Chancellor of Systemism. I’m just the guy who finally said the quiet part out loud and gave a name to something that already existed.

πŸŽ›️ Why Coining the Term Was Ridiculous (But Weirdly Necessary)

Let me be honest: Having to coin a term for this was ridiculous.

I didn’t wake up thinking, “Today I will shape the linguistic destiny of DJ culture.”

But after certain… experiences… where someone tried to surgically remove controllerism from DJing and pretend DJs wouldn’t notice, I realized something:

If you don’t name your lane, someone else will — and they might name it something horrifying.

Which brings us to…

πŸ”₯ The 10 Worst Possible Names for Systemism

(A list of terms that absolutely should never see the light of day)

  1. Standalonery Sounds like a medieval punishment.

  2. Boxism Could refer to a microwave.

  3. Unit DJing No comment.

  4. All‑In‑Oneology The study of why your firmware update failed.

  5. DeckHubbers Feels like a rejected social network.

  6. Integrated Workflow Movement™ Corporate. Terrifying.

  7. Consoleism DJ Hero flashbacks.

  8. Platform DJing Sounds like a political party.

  9. Systematicians A group of people who definitely write each other’s Wikipedia pages.

  10. One‑Box Performance Arts Absolutely not.

This is why I stepped in early. Not as a founder — just as someone who didn’t want the lane to be named Unitism by a committee of ten music‑tech guys connected through a German software company who host three events and assume DJs won’t say anything.

⭐ Systemism vs. DJ Systemism (The Actual Difference)

Let’s settle this:

Systemism

What DJs call the lane when talking to other DJs.

DJ Systemism

What we call it when talking to the public, educators, or search engines so nobody confuses it with a philosophy textbook.

That’s it. No manifesto. No hierarchy. No sci‑fi mob boss.

Just context.

🎚️ Final Thoughts (and a Warning)

I didn’t invent the lane. I didn’t start the movement. I didn’t crown myself anything.

I just gave a name to something DJs were already doing — because if I didn’t, someone else would have named it something tragic.

So yes… I guess that makes me a Systemist.

Unless there’s a better term.

Watch out! The Systemist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
