Los Angeles County, 2005 In 2005, the night still believed it would live forever. The clubs opened after dark and closed sometime after sunrise, though nobody inside paid much attention to clocks. Outside, hundreds waited beneath flickering marquees while men with clipboards decided who deserved admission. Inside, champagne bottles arrived trailing sparks. Cameras flashed. Women in silver dresses laughed too loudly. Men in untucked designer shirts shouted into one another’s ears and pretended they could hear. The bass was so loud it seemed to rearrange the bones in David Charles Karma’s chest.
