Draft Two - Part One

FADE IN:

INT. GRAND CIVIC ARENA - BACKSTAGE - NIGHT

A wall of APPLAUSE shakes the black curtains.

LEONARD "LENNY" ROSENBLATT, 48, stands alone in a tailored midnight-blue suit. Immaculate hair. Television smile. The calm of a man who believes noise is oxygen.

He closes his eyes and lets five thousand strangers love him.

MARTIN KELLER, 36, brisk and permanently caffeinated, approaches with a headset and tablet.

MARTIN

Thirty seconds. Third row center, couple from Boise. Wife beat breast cancer. Husband sold his truck for the VIP package.

Leonard nods without opening his eyes.

MARTIN

Left aisle, gray jacket. Construction foreman. Father died six weeks ago.

LEONARD

Name?

MARTIN

Frank Delaney.

Martin swipes.

MARTIN

Front row. Emma Collins, twelve. Saved allowance six months to buy your book.

LEONARD

Blue dress?

MARTIN

Blue dress. Braces.

A STAGE MANAGER leans through the curtain.

STAGE MANAGER

Ten seconds.

Leonard opens his eyes. The smile arrives before the man does.

ANNOUNCER (O.S.)

The author of eleven international bestsellers. The founder of KarmaCoin. The man who taught the world to turn pain into power -- Leonard Rosenblatt!

The curtain opens.

INT. GRAND CIVIC ARENA - CONTINUOUS

Five thousand people rise as one.

Leonard steps into white light. He does not wave. He simply stands there until the cheering crests.

LEONARD

Okay. Who's having the worst day here?

Laughter. Hundreds of hands shoot up.

LEONARD

Excellent. Misery with participation. That's progress.

More laughter.

Leonard points toward a WOMAN in the balcony.

LEONARD

You weren't planning to raise your hand.

WOMAN

No.

LEONARD

What's your name?

WOMAN

Rebecca.

Leonard steps down from the stage. Camera operators scramble to follow.

LEONARD

Rebecca, you're sitting three seats away from someone who loves you, and you're still convinced you're alone.

Rebecca starts crying. The audience falls silent.

Leonard reaches her row and kneels beside her.

LEONARD

Sometimes we don't need better answers. We need a better question.

He hugs her. The arena erupts.

Backstage, Martin checks Rebecca's profile off his tablet.

INT. GRAND CIVIC ARENA - LATER

Leonard paces the stage beneath a thirty-foot image of his own face.

LEONARD

Your past is not a prison. It's a receipt. It tells you what you paid. It does not tell you what you own.

The audience hangs on every word.

LEONARD

And when you stop asking, 'Why did this happen to me?' and start asking, 'What can I build from it?' -- that's the day your life stops belonging to everybody who hurt you.

A standing ovation begins before he finishes.

Leonard looks out over the worshipful crowd. For one unguarded second, he looks frightened.

CUT TO:

INT. VIP MEET-AND-GREET - NIGHT

A polished assembly line of human gratitude.

Leonard signs books, hugs strangers, remembers names supplied through a nearly invisible earpiece.

LEONARD

Frank. Your father would be proud you're still showing up.

FRANK, the construction foreman, breaks down and embraces him.

Martin feeds the next profile.

MARTIN (IN EARPIECE)

Dina Patel. Divorced. Starting a bakery.

LEONARD

Dina, cinnamon rolls or cupcakes?

DINA

Cinnamon rolls.

LEONARD

Good. Cupcakes are tiny cakes with commitment issues.

She laughs, delighted.

Then EMMA COLLINS, 12, blue dress, braces, clutching a battered first edition, steps forward.

EMMA

My dad says your books saved our family.

Leonard kneels to her level. His professional smile softens.

LEONARD

What's your dad's name?

Silence in his earpiece.

Across the room, Martin taps the dead tablet. No power.

Leonard looks at Emma. No file. No cue. No manufactured miracle.

EMMA

Daniel.

LEONARD

Tell Daniel... thank you for giving the book a chance.

Emma hugs him.

Leonard hugs her back, surprised by the force of it.

INT. SERVICE CORRIDOR - MOMENTS LATER

Leonard and Martin walk fast toward the loading dock. Assistants trail with garment bags, flowers and branded gift boxes.

LEONARD

Your battery died.

MARTIN

It happens.

LEONARD

She still hugged me.

MARTIN

You're Leonard Rosenblatt.

Leonard stops.

LEONARD

That wasn't what I said.

Martin checks his watch.

MARTIN

Car's waiting. Board call at seven. Singapore livestream at eight-thirty.

Leonard resumes walking.

INT. LUXURY SUV - MOVING - NIGHT

The city glides past tinted windows.

Leonard watches clips of himself on three phones held by three assistants.

SOCIAL MEDIA DIRECTOR

Rebecca is already at two-point-one million views.

LEONARD

Caption?

SOCIAL MEDIA DIRECTOR

'He saw the pain no one else could see.'

LEONARD

Too much.

A beat.

LEONARD

Keep it.

His phone rings: MIRIAM VALE.

He declines the call.

It rings again.

He declines again.

INT. LEONARD'S PENTHOUSE - NIGHT

Glass walls. Museum furniture. A city view worth millions.

Leonard enters alone.

His house system activates.

HOUSE SYSTEM

Welcome home, Leonard.

LEONARD

Thank you.

He waits, almost expecting the house to say more.

On a sideboard: eleven framed bestseller covers, four humanitarian awards, a photograph of Leonard and MIRIAM before the expensive teeth and tailored suits.

Leonard pours sparkling water into a crystal tumbler.

His phone fills with messages. Congratulations. Metrics. Requests. Invitations.

No one asks how he is.

He calls Martin.

INT. MARTIN'S APARTMENT - INTERCUT

Martin is in bed beside his sleeping wife. He stares at Leonard's name on the screen.

He lets it ring.

INT. LEONARD'S PENTHOUSE - CONTINUOUS

Voicemail.

LEONARD

Martin, it's me. Nothing urgent.

He almost hangs up.

LEONARD

Good show tonight.

He ends the call.

The penthouse remains enormous.

CUT TO:

INT. KARMACOIN HEADQUARTERS - BOARDROOM - MORNING

A forty-foot table beneath a glowing gold K logo.

Leonard sits at the head. Around him: executives, lawyers, engineers and nervous money.

On a screen, a red graph plunges.

PRIYA SHAH

Withdrawals increased four hundred percent overnight.

PRIYA SHAH, 42, Chief Financial Officer, does not look impressed by charisma.

LEONARD

People panic. Then they calm down.

PRIYA

The reserve account is short sixty-eight million dollars.

Silence.

LEONARD

Short temporarily.

PRIYA

Money does not become less missing because you add an adverb.

A few executives suppress smiles.

CALEB REED

The new institutional round closes Friday.

CALEB, 29, Leonard's brilliant young strategist, believes in him with dangerous sincerity.

CALEB

Once the capital hits, we stabilize the reserve, reopen withdrawals and announce the education fund.

PRIYA

That is new investor money covering old obligations.

LEONARD

It's liquidity.

PRIYA

It's a sentence prosecutors enjoy.

General Counsel HOWARD FELD slides a folder toward Leonard.

HOWARD

We should suspend sales immediately.

LEONARD

And announce weakness to the market? No.

PRIYA

The market already knows.

LEONARD

The market knows what we tell it to know.

Priya looks at him for a long moment.

PRIYA

That may be the problem.

INT. KARMACOIN HEADQUARTERS - HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER

Leonard exits with Caleb and Martin.

LEONARD

She's catastrophizing.

MARTIN

She's the CFO. Catastrophizing is literally in the job description.

CALEB

I can call the institutional group.

LEONARD

No. I call them. People don't invest in numbers. They invest in certainty.

MARTIN

Do we have certainty?

Leonard stops at a wall bearing his quote: BELIEF CREATES REALITY.

LEONARD

We have me.

INT. RECORDING STUDIO - DAY

Leonard sits before cameras for a livestream. Beneath the desk, his foot bounces.

LEONARD

KarmaCoin is not collapsing. KarmaCoin is evolving.

Behind the camera, Priya closes her eyes.

LEONARD

Every revolution is called reckless by the people who profited from the old world.

Comments fly across a monitor: HOLD. BUY THE DIP. LENNY NEVER LIES.

LEONARD

Fear is expensive. Courage compounds.

Caleb watches the price tick upward.

CALEB

It's working.

Priya watches the withdrawal queue grow.

PRIYA

No. The speech is working.

INT. MIRIAM'S COMMUNITY FINANCE CENTER - AFTERNOON

A modest classroom in a converted storefront.

MIRIAM VALE, 46, grounded, direct, and entirely unimpressed by status, writes on a whiteboard: IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IT, DON'T INVEST IN IT.

Ten ordinary people sit with notebooks.

MIRIAM

A promise is not collateral. A celebrity is not regulation. And confidence is not math.

A STUDENT raises a hand.

STUDENT

What about KarmaCoin? Leonard Rosenblatt says--

MIRIAM

Leonard Rosenblatt says many things beautifully.

The door opens.

Leonard enters carrying two coffees and a smile from another life.

LEONARD

And occasionally correctly.

Miriam stares at him.

EXT. COMMUNITY FINANCE CENTER - LATER

Leonard and Miriam sit on a bench with untouched coffees.

MIRIAM

You ignored six calls.

LEONARD

I was working.

MIRIAM

You were being applauded.

LEONARD

That's part of the work.

MIRIAM

Priya called me.

Leonard's expression hardens.

LEONARD

She had no right.

MIRIAM

She sounded scared.

LEONARD

Priya is paid to be scared.

MIRIAM

Are you stealing from people?

Leonard laughs once, hurt more than amused.

LEONARD

You came all the way down here to ask me that?

MIRIAM

You came down here.

A beat.

LEONARD

No. I'm not stealing from anyone.

MIRIAM

Then why didn't you answer immediately?

Leonard looks away.

LEONARD

Because I knew you wouldn't believe me.

MIRIAM

That isn't the same as being innocent.

He stands.

LEONARD

You always do this.

MIRIAM

Do what?

LEONARD

Talk to me like I'm still the guy sleeping on your couch, borrowing gas money.

MIRIAM

That guy told the truth faster.

Leonard absorbs the hit.

MIRIAM

Stop selling for five minutes. Look at the numbers. If people are going to get hurt, tell them before they do.

LEONARD

You think I built all this to hurt people?

MIRIAM

I think you built it because you couldn't stand being nobody.

Leonard leaves the coffees on the bench.

LEONARD

Nobody built a school. Nobody paid your rent for two years. Nobody put your center in this building.

MIRIAM

And there it is.

LEONARD

What?

MIRIAM

The invoice.

Leonard walks away.

INT. KARMACOIN HEADQUARTERS - NIGHT

Most of the office is dark.

Leonard stands before the falling graph.

Caleb enters carrying two takeout boxes.

CALEB

You need to eat.

LEONARD

How bad?

CALEB

The institutional group wants independent access to the reserve accounts.

LEONARD

No.

CALEB

Then they walk.

LEONARD

They won't.

CALEB

They already postponed the wire.

Leonard sits.

LEONARD

When did belief become a liability?

CALEB

Belief isn't the liability.

Caleb places the food down.

CALEB

The hole is.

Leonard looks at him.

LEONARD

Whose side are you on?

CALEB

Yours. That's why I'm still here.

Leonard softens.

CALEB

Suspend sales. Freeze new deposits. Tell people the truth before somebody else tells it for you.

LEONARD

And erase ten years in one press release?

CALEB

Maybe save what's left.

Leonard looks again at the red graph.

LEONARD

Draft something.

Caleb nods and leaves.

Leonard opens the reserve account on the screen.

The balance is worse than Priya said.

His phone rings. Martin.

LEONARD

Tell me something good.

INT. MARTIN'S CAR - INTERCUT

Martin sits outside his home, pale.

MARTIN

A reporter has the internal emails.

LEONARD

Which emails?

MARTIN

All of them.

Leonard stares at his own reflection in the black window.

CUT TO BLACK.

END OF PART ONE

INT. KARMACOIN HEADQUARTERS - NIGHT

The reserve-account screen glows in Leonard's face.

MARTIN (PHONE)

The reporter has internal emails, reserve reports, vendor invoices, and the board minutes from March.

LEONARD

Who gave them to her?

MARTIN (PHONE)

Does it matter?

LEONARD

It matters to me.

Caleb re-enters. One look at Leonard tells him everything.

CALEB

What happened?

LEONARD

Somebody wants attention.

MARTIN (PHONE)

Her story goes live at six tomorrow morning.

LEONARD

Then we go first.

CALEB

With what?

LEONARD

The truth.

Caleb waits.

CALEB

Which version?

Leonard looks at him sharply.

LEONARD

The version that keeps the company alive.

INT. KARMACOIN HEADQUARTERS - WAR ROOM - LATER

A dozen executives crowd around laptops and cold coffee.

On a monitor: DRAFT STATEMENT 14.

HOWARD

'Temporary liquidity event' sounds deceptive.

LEONARD

It's accurate.

PRIYA

It is not temporary unless new money arrives.

LEONARD

New money is arriving.

PRIYA

You keep speaking about future money as though it is sitting in the lobby.

MARTIN

The institutional group won't answer.

Leonard points at the draft.

LEONARD

Replace 'temporary' with 'market-driven.'

HOWARD

That makes it worse.

LEONARD

Then write something better.

Nobody moves.

LEONARD

What am I paying all of you for?

Priya closes her laptop.

PRIYA

I resigned two hours ago.

The room stills.

LEONARD

No, you didn't.

PRIYA

I sent it to the board.

LEONARD

You're emotional.

PRIYA

I am terrified. That is not the same thing.

LEONARD

You leave now, the market reads panic.

PRIYA

The market should panic.

She stands.

PRIYA

You built a church around certainty. Now everyone is afraid to admit the roof is on fire.

Priya exits.

Leonard looks around the room. No one meets his eyes.

INT. KARMACOIN HEADQUARTERS - PRIVATE OFFICE - PRE-DAWN

Leonard records a statement alone.

LEONARD

Tonight, misinformation has been circulated by individuals seeking to profit from fear.

He stops the recording.

LEONARD

No.

He starts again.

LEONARD

KarmaCoin is facing a short-term challenge, and I want you to hear directly from me--

Stops.

Again.

LEONARD

I have always believed--

He slams the desk.

On the wall, his own framed quote: HONESTY IS THE FASTEST PATH TO FREEDOM.

Leonard takes the frame down and turns it face-first against the wall.

INT. NEWSROOM - MORNING

A digital clock flips to 6:00 A.M.

The article publishes.

HEADLINE: KARMA COIN'S MISSING MILLIONS.

MONTAGE - THE COLLAPSE

Phones buzz beside sleeping investors.

A college student refreshes an account balance that will not load.

A retiree watches a withdrawal request change from PENDING to SUSPENDED.

Cable-news graphics fill screens: KARMA CRASH.

Influencers delete old promotional posts.

Others repost them with captions: I KNEW IT.

KarmaCoin drops sixty percent.

Then seventy.

Then the exchange freezes trading.

At headquarters, employees carry cardboard boxes past the gold K.

INT. LEONARD'S PENTHOUSE - MORNING

Leonard stands before three televisions. Every screen carries his face.

ANCHOR #1 (TV)

Questions are mounting about whether Rosenblatt knowingly misled investors.

ANCHOR #2 (TV)

Federal regulators have not yet announced an investigation--

PODCAST HOST (TV)

This guy sold enlightenment with a referral code.

Leonard turns off one television. The second grows louder.

He turns off the second. The third remains.

ANCHOR #3 (TV)

Former employees describe a culture in which challenging Rosenblatt was treated as disloyalty.

Leonard throws the remote. The television stays on.

His phone vibrates constantly.

MARTIN. HOWARD. CALEB. MIRIAM.

He answers Miriam.

LEONARD

You happy?

INT. MIRIAM'S APARTMENT - INTERCUT

Miriam stands at her kitchen window, still in yesterday's clothes.

MIRIAM

No.

LEONARD

You were right. You should enjoy it.

MIRIAM

People lost money.

LEONARD

People made choices.

MIRIAM

Because you told them fear was weakness.

LEONARD

I believed in it.

MIRIAM

Believing your own lie doesn't make it the truth.

Leonard looks around the empty penthouse.

LEONARD

I did not steal sixty-eight million dollars.

MIRIAM

Then tell investigators where it went.

LEONARD

There are no investigators.

His doorbell rings.

Then pounding.

FEDERAL AGENT (O.S.)

Mr. Rosenblatt? Federal agents. We have a warrant.

Miriam hears it over the phone.

MIRIAM

Leonard--

He hangs up.

INT. LEONARD'S PENTHOUSE - CONTINUOUS

The pounding continues.

Leonard moves through the penthouse, not running yet, but moving faster with every step.

He opens a wall safe.

Cash. Passports. A gold watch. An old photograph of Leonard and Miriam eating takeout on a bare apartment floor.

He takes the passport, cash, photograph.

Leaves the watch.

INT. SERVICE ELEVATOR - MOMENTS LATER

Leonard descends with a duffel bag.

The elevator stops.

Doors open on the parking level.

Martin stands there.

LEONARD

How did you get in?

MARTIN

You gave me everything except a key to your feelings.

Leonard pushes past him.

MARTIN

They'll find you.

LEONARD

I'm not running.

MARTIN

You have a passport in your hand.

Leonard looks down, as if seeing it for the first time.

LEONARD

I need time.

MARTIN

For what?

LEONARD

To fix this.

MARTIN

You can't speech your way out of a bank record.

Leonard turns on him.

LEONARD

I made you.

Martin flinches.

MARTIN

There he is.

Leonard regrets it instantly, but pride gets there first.

LEONARD

Move.

Martin steps aside.

MARTIN

Caleb thinks you should surrender.

LEONARD

Caleb thinks whatever the last honest person in the room tells him to think.

MARTIN

He thinks you're still worth saving.

Leonard gets into a black sedan.

MARTIN

Are you?

Leonard drives away.

EXT. CITY STREETS - MORNING

News helicopters hover over the building as Leonard's sedan slips into traffic.

INT. KARMACOIN HEADQUARTERS - LOBBY - DAY

Federal agents move through the lobby.

Employees crowd outside behind police barricades.

Caleb stands beneath the giant gold K while an AGENT questions him.

AGENT

When did you last speak with Mr. Rosenblatt?

CALEB

Last night.

AGENT

Did he indicate where he was going?

CALEB

He indicated he was right.

INT. DINER - HIGHWAY - DAY

Leonard sits in a rear booth wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap advertising his own foundation.

Every television in the diner shows him.

ANCHOR (TV)

Authorities are currently seeking Leonard Rosenblatt for questioning.

A WAITRESS, 60s, pours coffee.

WAITRESS

You look familiar.

LEONARD

I get that.

WAITRESS

You one of those property brothers?

LEONARD

No.

WAITRESS

Shame. They seem nice.

She walks away.

Leonard studies a road map on his phone.

An old text thread from BROTHER JACK appears: IF YOU EVER NEED QUIET, SUN RIVER HAS PLENTY.

The message is three years old.

Leonard types: IS THE OFFER STILL OPEN?

He waits.

Three dots appear.

BROTHER JACK: QUIET DOESN'T EXPIRE.

EXT. RURAL HIGHWAY - AFTERNOON

The city gives way to farms, then foothills, then narrow mountain roads.

Leonard's sedan climbs through pine forest.

His phone loses service.

He raises it toward the windshield.

LEONARD

No. No, no, no.

NO SERVICE.

For the first time in years, nobody can reach him.

For the first time in years, he cannot reach anybody.

EXT. SUN RIVER MONASTERY - LATE AFTERNOON

A weathered wooden sign beside a gravel road: SUN RIVER MONASTERY.

No gates. No security. No cameras.

Leonard's sedan rolls into a modest collection of stone buildings, gardens, sheds and old trees.

A CHICKEN stands in the road.

Leonard honks.

The chicken does not move.

He honks again.

A monk carrying firewood looks over, unimpressed.

Leonard gets out.

LEONARD

Can someone move the chicken?

The monk keeps walking.

LEONARD

Hello?

The chicken pecks his shoe.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - MOMENTS LATER

BROTHER JACK, 68, arrives with a crooked smile, work gloves and sawdust in his beard.

BROTHER JACK

Lenny Rosenblatt.

Leonard looks relieved enough to hug him.

Jack instead hands Leonard a crate of apples.

BROTHER JACK

Kitchen.

LEONARD

Jack, I need to explain something.

BROTHER JACK

Kitchen's that way.

LEONARD

There are federal agents looking for me.

BROTHER JACK

Then carry quickly.

Jack walks away.

Leonard struggles with the crate.

LEONARD

You could pretend to be concerned.

BROTHER JACK

I am concerned.

Jack points.

BROTHER JACK

Those apples bruise easily.

INT. MONASTERY KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS

A warm, crowded kitchen. Pots simmer. Bread cools on racks.

MIGUEL SANTOS, 55, gentle and protective of every vegetable he has ever met, chops carrots.

OWEN PRICE, 61, severe and observant, reviews a ledger.

SILAS, 40s, silent, carries a small dry-erase board clipped to his belt.

Leonard enters with the crate.

LEONARD

Where do you want these?

Nobody answers.

LEONARD

The apples.

Miguel points to a table.

Leonard sets the crate down with a thud.

MIGUEL

Gentle.

LEONARD

They're apples.

MIGUEL

Exactly.

Owen looks up from the ledger.

OWEN

How much is missing?

Leonard freezes.

LEONARD

Excuse me?

OWEN

You arrived in a luxury car wearing a disguise, carrying cash, and checking a phone with no signal every eleven seconds.

Owen returns to the ledger.

OWEN

So. How much?

LEONARD

I don't know what Jack told you.

OWEN

Nothing. Jack thinks gossip dulls tools.

Silas writes on his board and holds it up.

NEW GUY STOLE THE APPLES?

LEONARD

I did not steal anything.

Silas erases one word.

NEW GUY STOLE APPLES?

LEONARD

No.

Silas nods, satisfied.

INT. ABBOT'S STUDY - EVENING

A simple room. Books, tea, one window overlooking the garden.

SUN HO, 70s, the abbot, sits behind a scarred wooden desk.

Leonard sits opposite him, still wearing sunglasses indoors.

SUN HO

You may remove those.

LEONARD

My eyes are sensitive.

SUN HO

To light?

LEONARD

Recognition.

Sun Ho pours tea.

LEONARD

I need somewhere private for a few days. Maybe a week.

SUN HO

We have rooms.

LEONARD

Good. I can make a donation.

SUN HO

We have work.

LEONARD

I mean a substantial donation.

SUN HO

The work is substantial.

Leonard removes the sunglasses.

LEONARD

Do you know who I am?

SUN HO

Leonard Rosenblatt.

LEONARD

And?

SUN HO

Wet shoes.

Leonard looks down. Mud covers his expensive loafers.

LEONARD

I am dealing with a crisis.

SUN HO

The floor is dealing with your shoes.

Sun Ho places a rag on the desk.

SUN HO

Begin there.

INT. GUEST ROOM - NIGHT

A narrow bed. A wooden chair. A washbasin. No television.

Leonard opens the closet.

Three gray work shirts. Two pairs of rough pants.

He checks the room for cameras.

Nothing.

He checks under the bed.

A dustpan.

He takes out his phone. No service.

He tries the window.

The glass does not open.

A BELL rings outside.

Leonard jumps.

INT. MONASTERY DINING HALL - NIGHT

Monks and volunteers eat vegetable stew at long tables.

Leonard enters in his designer clothes.

No one looks up.

He sits beside Jack.

LEONARD

Is there a menu?

BROTHER JACK

There was.

LEONARD

What happened to it?

BROTHER JACK

We cooked it.

Miguel places a bowl before Leonard.

LEONARD

Is this vegan?

MIGUEL

It did not complain.

Silas holds up his board.

STEW HAS NO AGENT.

Leonard studies the gray stew.

LEONARD

Do you have salt?

Every person at the table looks at him.

Miguel slowly slides the salt cellar over.

MIGUEL

Taste first.

Leonard tastes.

It is excellent.

He quietly returns the salt.

INT. MONASTERY CHAPEL - NIGHT

Candlelight. Wooden benches. Rain begins against the windows.

Leonard sits in the last row while the community observes silence.

He fidgets.

Checks his dead phone.

Fidgets more.

A floorboard creaks. It sounds enormous.

Leonard looks toward Sun Ho, waiting for instruction.

Sun Ho simply sits.

Five minutes pass.

Leonard cannot stand it.

LEONARD

Are we waiting for something?

Nobody answers.

Silas raises his board.

YOU.

INT. GUEST ROOM - LATER

Leonard lies awake in the dark.

No traffic. No television. No applause.

Only rain.

Then the bell rings again.

Leonard sits upright.

LEONARD

Oh, come on.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - PRE-DAWN

The community moves through blue morning light.

Leonard appears in gray work clothes that fit badly.

Jack hands him a broom.

LEONARD

What am I doing?

BROTHER JACK

Sweeping.

LEONARD

I understand the object. I mean strategically.

BROTHER JACK

Dirt goes there.

Jack points to a pile.

BROTHER JACK

Not-dirt stays here.

Leonard looks at the large courtyard.

LEONARD

By myself?

BROTHER JACK

Until the broom develops ambition.

Leonard begins sweeping.

He pushes leaves into an immaculate line.

A gust of wind scatters them.

Leonard stares at the sky as though it has violated a contract.

Silas passes, writes on his board, and holds it up.

MARKET CORRECTION.

Leonard glares.

Silas keeps walking.

EXT. MONASTERY GARDEN - MORNING

Miguel kneels beside rows of tomato plants.

Leonard arrives carrying the broom.

LEONARD

Courtyard's finished.

Behind him, wind sends leaves rolling across the stones.

MIGUEL

It is resting.

Miguel hands Leonard a watering can.

MIGUEL

Only the roots. Not the leaves.

LEONARD

I can water a plant.

Leonard drenches the first tomato plant.

MIGUEL

You can water a flood.

Miguel takes the can back.

LEONARD

Do you know how many companies I've built?

MIGUEL

How many survived you?

Leonard has no answer.

INT. MONASTERY WORKSHOP - LATE MORNING

Jack repairs a cracked chair.

Leonard watches him apply glue with patient precision.

LEONARD

Wouldn't it be easier to buy another one?

BROTHER JACK

Probably.

LEONARD

Then why repair it?

BROTHER JACK

Because this one is here.

Jack hands Leonard sandpaper.

BROTHER JACK

Smooth the edge.

LEONARD

I have people for this.

BROTHER JACK

Not here.

Leonard sands too aggressively.

BROTHER JACK

You're punishing the chair.

LEONARD

I'm improving it.

BROTHER JACK

That's what people say before they ruin wood.

Leonard slows down.

INT. ABBOT'S STUDY - DAY

Sun Ho reads while Leonard paces.

LEONARD

I need access to a phone.

SUN HO

There is one in the office.

LEONARD

Good.

SUN HO

It calls emergency services.

LEONARD

This is an emergency.

SUN HO

Are you bleeding?

LEONARD

Financially.

SUN HO

Then the phone cannot help.

Leonard sits.

LEONARD

You don't understand what's happening out there.

SUN HO

Out where?

LEONARD

The world.

SUN HO

This is in the world.

LEONARD

No. This is a place people come to avoid it.

SUN HO

You came here.

A beat.

SUN HO

What are you avoiding?

LEONARD

I am trying to decide what to do.

SUN HO

No. You are trying to delay doing it.

Leonard stands.

LEONARD

You met me ten minutes ago.

SUN HO

You have been speaking for nine.

EXT. MONASTERY CEMETERY - AFTERNOON

Leonard walks alone among small stone markers.

The names are simple. No titles. No achievements.

He stops at one marker: ANNA JACKSON. BELOVED WIFE. 1952-2018.

Brother Jack stands nearby holding a folded letter.

LEONARD

Your wife?

BROTHER JACK

Still is.

Jack places the letter beneath a stone at the grave.

LEONARD

You write to her?

BROTHER JACK

Every Thursday.

LEONARD

Does it help?

BROTHER JACK

Helps me write.

Jack looks at Leonard.

BROTHER JACK

You should try saying things to people before they die.

Jack walks away.

Leonard remains among the stones.

INT. MONASTERY DINING HALL - EVENING

Dinner. Leonard eats without asking for salt.

Owen sits across from him.

OWEN

Sixty-eight million was the reported shortfall.

Leonard stops chewing.

OWEN

Probably more by now.

LEONARD

You have internet?

OWEN

Radio.

LEONARD

What did they say?

OWEN

That federal agents searched your home and office. That your counsel has resigned. That investors are filing lawsuits.

LEONARD

Howard resigned?

OWEN

Interesting that this is the detail you heard.

Leonard drops his spoon.

LEONARD

I need to leave.

BROTHER JACK

Road's washed out.

LEONARD

What?

MIGUEL

Storm took the lower crossing.

LEONARD

How long?

BROTHER JACK

Day. Maybe two.

LEONARD

I cannot stay here two days.

Silas raises his board.

FIRST DAY SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED.

Leonard stands.

LEONARD

This is not funny.

Silas erases SUCCESSFULLY.

FIRST DAY COMPLETED.

INT. GUEST ROOM - NIGHT

Leonard packs the duffel bag.

He removes the passport and cash.

Then the old photograph of himself and Miriam.

He sits on the bed.

Outside, the bell rings once.

Leonard stares at the photograph.

Slowly, he puts everything back.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - DAWN

The next morning.

The bell rings.

Leonard is already awake.

He stands in the courtyard holding the broom.

Jack approaches.

BROTHER JACK

Couldn't sleep?

LEONARD

Your bell is a war crime.

BROTHER JACK

You get used to it.

LEONARD

I don't want to get used to it.

Jack hands him work gloves.

BROTHER JACK

Nobody does.

Leonard begins sweeping.

The same gust of wind catches the leaves.

This time he watches them scatter.

Then he starts again.

FADE OUT.

END OF PART TWO

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - MORNING

Leonard sweeps. Wind moves the same leaves back across the stones.

He pauses, looks at the broom, then at the courtyard as though both have personally betrayed him.

LEONARD

There has to be a more efficient way.

INT. MONASTERY LIBRARY - LATER

A tiny library with crooked shelves, old books and one ancient desktop computer disconnected from the internet.

Leonard covers a chalkboard with boxes, arrows and colored labels.

At the top: SUN RIVER OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE INITIATIVE.

Brother Jack, Miguel, Owen, Silas and three volunteers stare at it.

LEONARD

Right now, tasks are assigned informally, which creates duplication, uncertainty and hidden labor costs.

OWEN

The labor cost is zero.

LEONARD

That is not the point.

MIGUEL

What is the point?

LEONARD

Clarity. Accountability. Measurable outcomes.

Silas writes on his board.

MEASURE TOMATO.

LEONARD

Exactly. Yield per row. Water usage. Hours invested.

MIGUEL

Tomatoes do not report to you.

LEONARD

Everything reports to somebody.

OWEN

That sentence explains your current situation.

Leonard ignores him and unveils color-coded chore cards.

LEONARD

Blue is maintenance. Green is agriculture. Yellow is food service. Red is urgent.

BROTHER JACK

What color is sweeping?

LEONARD

Facilities.

BROTHER JACK

What color?

LEONARD

Blue.

BROTHER JACK

Good.

Jack takes every blue card and hands them to Leonard.

BROTHER JACK

Facilities.

MONTAGE - LEONARD OPTIMIZES SUN RIVER

Leonard times breakfast service with a stopwatch.

Miguel deliberately ladles stew slower.

Leonard labels shelves in the tool shed. Jack moves every tool back to where it was.

Leonard posts a sign: PLEASE RETURN BROOMS TO DESIGNATED AREA.

The chicken sleeps beneath it.

Leonard creates an attendance sheet for morning silence.

Silas signs in as PRESENT, SPIRITUALLY UNCERTAIN.

Leonard arranges firewood by size, moisture and projected burn value.

The cooks immediately move half of it closer to the kitchen.

Leonard watches his system disappear in under ten minutes.

EXT. WOODPILE - AFTERNOON

Leonard confronts Jack beside the rearranged firewood.

LEONARD

I spent three hours designing that system.

BROTHER JACK

We needed wood by the stove.

LEONARD

Then the stove should have been included in the planning process.

BROTHER JACK

It was cold.

LEONARD

That is not how organizations improve.

BROTHER JACK

The soup improved.

Jack carries in an armful of wood.

Leonard looks at his beautiful, useless chart.

INT. DINING HALL - EVENING

The community eats. Leonard sits alone at one end, wounded by indifference.

Caleb appears in the doorway, soaked from rain and holding a backpack.

CALEB

I had to hike the last mile.

Leonard rises fast, relief breaking through pride.

LEONARD

You found me.

CALEB

Everybody will eventually.

INT. GUEST ROOM - NIGHT

Caleb sets documents across Leonard's bed.

CALEB

The board terminated you. Howard is cooperating. Priya gave a statement. The reserve shortfall is eighty-four million now.

LEONARD

How does missing money grow?

CALEB

Legal claims, frozen assets, counterparty defaults. Also, some of it was never there.

Leonard studies the papers without reading them.

LEONARD

We need a response team. We need a media strategy. We need to get in front of this.

CALEB

The lawyers say surrender.

LEONARD

The lawyers who abandoned me?

CALEB

The new lawyer I found who has not met you yet.

LEONARD

Good. Keep it that way until we have leverage.

CALEB

There is no leverage.

LEONARD

There is always leverage.

CALEB

That belief is why I came alone.

Leonard looks up.

CALEB

Martin would not come. Your staff will not answer. Half the investors want prison. The other half want blood.

LEONARD

And you?

CALEB

I want you to stop making me choose between loyalty and reality.

Leonard softens, then hardens again.

LEONARD

We can still repair this.

CALEB

You keep saying we.

LEONARD

You were part of it.

CALEB

I know.

That lands harder than accusation.

CALEB

I told people you were different. I convinced my mother to invest.

LEONARD

How much?

CALEB

Everything she had after my father died.

Leonard cannot meet his eyes.

LEONARD

I will make her whole.

CALEB

With what?

Leonard has no answer.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - NIGHT

Caleb prepares to leave in the rain.

LEONARD

Stay until morning.

CALEB

I can't.

LEONARD

You hiked through a storm.

CALEB

That was easier than this conversation.

LEONARD

Caleb.

Caleb turns.

LEONARD

I never meant to hurt your mother.

CALEB

You never meant to look closely enough to know who got hurt.

Caleb walks into the rain.

Leonard stands alone beneath the eaves.

Silas appears beside him and raises his board.

SORRY IS NOT A PLAN.

LEONARD

I know.

Silas erases NOT A PLAN.

SORRY IS.

He walks away.

INT. MONASTERY CHAPEL - LATE NIGHT

Leonard sits alone in the last row.

No audience. No camera. No cue in his ear.

LEONARD

I am sorry.

The words sound small in the empty room.

He tries again.

LEONARD

I am sorry.

Still no applause.

EXT. MONASTERY GARDEN - MORNING

Miguel teaches Leonard to water tomatoes gently at the roots.

MIGUEL

Slow.

LEONARD

I am going slow.

MIGUEL

For you, perhaps.

Leonard reduces the flow.

MIGUEL

The plant takes what it can take. More water does not make it grow faster.

LEONARD

More capital usually does.

MIGUEL

How did that work?

Leonard almost fires back. Instead he smiles despite himself.

LEONARD

You save that one all morning?

MIGUEL

Since yesterday.

INT. MONASTERY WORKSHOP - DAY

Jack and Leonard repair a section of broken fence.

Jack measures once. Leonard measures four times.

BROTHER JACK

You planning to build a fence or interview it?

LEONARD

Precision prevents waste.

BROTHER JACK

So does cutting.

Leonard cuts. The board is too short.

Jack looks at him.

LEONARD

The saw drifted.

BROTHER JACK

Blame is fast here.

Jack hands him another board.

BROTHER JACK

Learning is slower.

EXT. CREEK - AFTERNOON

Leonard and Owen sit on rocks eating apples.

LEONARD

What were you before this?

OWEN

Unpleasant.

LEONARD

Professionally.

OWEN

Investment banking.

LEONARD

Of course.

OWEN

Why of course?

LEONARD

You look at people like balance sheets.

OWEN

And you look at them like audiences.

Owen takes a bite.

OWEN

I mistook being necessary for being loved. The bank made that mistake profitable.

LEONARD

Why leave?

OWEN

A man lost his company because of a deal I designed. He thanked me for trying.

LEONARD

That made you quit?

OWEN

No. I accepted his thanks.

Leonard absorbs that.

OWEN

You did not invent your disease.

LEONARD

That is comforting.

OWEN

It should not be.

INT. MONASTERY KITCHEN - EVENING

Leonard washes dishes beside Silas.

Silas washes one bowl in the time Leonard washes four.

LEONARD

You know, with a two-sink rotation and a drying-rack redesign, we could cut this time in half.

Silas writes on his board without stopping.

STILL WASHING.

LEONARD

I am trying to help.

Silas erases one word.

TRY WASHING.

Leonard washes in silence.

MONTAGE - WEEKS PASS

Late-summer sun gives way to cooler mornings.

Leonard sweeps before being told.

He burns bread. Then produces a loaf nobody rejects.

He helps Miguel stake tomato plants without making a chart.

Jack teaches him to sharpen a chisel.

Owen beats him at chess. Leonard demands a rematch. Owen rotates the board and plays himself instead.

Leonard laughs with the others at dinner, then notices he is laughing without leading the conversation.

The bell rings before dawn. Leonard opens his eyes one moment before it sounds.

INT. MONASTERY OFFICE - DAY

Sun Ho sorts mail. A package addressed to Leonard sits on the desk.

SUN HO

Your old life has arrived in boxes.

INT. STORAGE BARN - LATER

Leonard opens the package.

Inside: framed awards, magazine covers, custom suits, branded sneakers, a gold microphone, copies of his books, a crystal trophy shaped like a flame.

A note from Martin: OFFICE LEASE TERMINATED. THESE WERE PERSONAL.

Leonard lifts the gold microphone.

BROTHER JACK (O.S.)

Does it work?

LEONARD

It cost twenty thousand dollars.

BROTHER JACK

That was not my question.

Jack enters.

LEONARD

I spoke to fifty thousand people with this in São Paulo.

BROTHER JACK

What did you tell them?

LEONARD

I don't remember.

Jack nods toward the boxes.

BROTHER JACK

Need help carrying it?

LEONARD

No.

EXT. FIELD BEHIND THE BARN - SUNSET

Leonard builds a small fire.

He brings out a stack of books, one of the magazine covers, and the gold microphone.

The monks watch from a distance but do not interfere.

Leonard holds his first book above the flames.

He cannot release it.

He lowers the book.

One by one, he returns everything to the box.

He extinguishes the fire.

INT. STORAGE BARN - NIGHT

Leonard sits among the boxes in darkness.

Miriam appears in the doorway.

MIRIAM

You always did make a dramatic mess before cleaning it up.

Leonard looks up, stunned.

LEONARD

How did you find me?

MIRIAM

Jack answered the monastery phone.

LEONARD

He told you?

MIRIAM

He said, "The loud one is in the barn."

She steps inside and looks at the boxes.

MIRIAM

This is all they sent?

LEONARD

Apparently the furniture belonged to the company.

MIRIAM

The company belonged to the investors.

LEONARD

You drove all this way to prosecute me?

MIRIAM

No. The government has people for that.

She sits on a crate.

MIRIAM

I came because Caleb called me after he left.

LEONARD

He should not have involved you.

MIRIAM

You involved all of us.

A long silence.

LEONARD

Do you think I am a bad person?

MIRIAM

I think you are asking for a verdict because you want the trial to end.

LEONARD

That is not an answer.

MIRIAM

Neither is good person or bad person.

LEONARD

Convenient.

MIRIAM

No. Convenient was loving you when you were generous and pretending not to notice generosity always came with your name attached.

Leonard looks down.

MIRIAM

I am helping people file claims. Retirees. Teachers. Small businesses. People who believed you.

LEONARD

I believed it too.

MIRIAM

That does not refund them.

LEONARD

I know.

Miriam studies him. It is the first unqualified admission she has heard.

MIRIAM

Do you?

LEONARD

I am beginning to.

EXT. MONASTERY WALKING PATH - MORNING

Leonard and Miriam walk beneath changing leaves.

LEONARD

They make me sweep.

MIRIAM

Finally, a punishment proportionate to your crimes.

LEONARD

You joke, but the courtyard is unusually large.

MIRIAM

How long are you staying?

LEONARD

Until I know what to do.

MIRIAM

You know what to do.

LEONARD

Surrender.

MIRIAM

Yes.

LEONARD

You say it like it is simple.

MIRIAM

Simple is not the same as easy.

They reach the creek.

LEONARD

If I go to prison, I lose everything.

MIRIAM

Leonard, look around.

He does.

MIRIAM

You already lost everything that could be taken.

LEONARD

You came here to tell me that?

MIRIAM

I came to see whether anything was left.

They stand beside the water.

LEONARD

Is there?

MIRIAM

Today.

Leonard looks at her.

MIRIAM

Tomorrow, sweep again.

She smiles faintly. Leonard realizes Sun Ho has infected everyone.

EXT. MONASTERY PARKING AREA - AFTERNOON

Miriam prepares to leave.

LEONARD

Do you forgive me?

MIRIAM

Not yet.

Leonard nods, accepting the answer.

MIRIAM

Forgiveness is not saying it did not happen. It is deciding you do not get to keep hurting me.

LEONARD

I do not want to hurt you.

MIRIAM

Then stop asking me to make you feel better about what you did.

She gets into her car.

MIRIAM

Tell the truth, Leonard. Not the useful truth. The whole one.

She drives away.

INT. ABBOT'S STUDY - EVENING

Leonard sits across from Sun Ho.

LEONARD

Do you think I am changing?

SUN HO

Who are you asking?

LEONARD

You.

SUN HO

Why?

LEONARD

Because you would know.

SUN HO

Then you still want an audience.

Leonard leans back, frustrated.

LEONARD

How do I become humble?

SUN HO

Compared to whom?

LEONARD

This is why people prefer podcasts.

SUN HO

Podcasts do not hand you a shovel.

Sun Ho hands him a shovel.

SUN HO

The drainage trench is blocked.

EXT. DRAINAGE TRENCH - DUSK

Leonard digs mud from a clogged trench.

Rain begins softly.

Jack joins him with another shovel.

LEONARD

Do you think I am changing?

BROTHER JACK

You ask less often.

They dig.

LEONARD

Miriam says surrender.

BROTHER JACK

Seems sensible.

LEONARD

You do not know the legal consequences.

BROTHER JACK

No.

LEONARD

Or the financial consequences.

BROTHER JACK

No.

LEONARD

Or what prison would be like.

BROTHER JACK

No.

LEONARD

Then how can you say it is sensible?

BROTHER JACK

Because hiding is making you boring.

Leonard laughs despite himself.

Water begins moving through the cleared trench.

INT. MONASTERY DINING HALL - NIGHT

The community eats.

Leonard enters late, soaked and muddy.

Without announcement, Miguel hands him a towel. Owen shifts over. Silas places an extra bowl before him.

Leonard sits among them.

For a while, nobody speaks.

LEONARD

Tomorrow I am calling an attorney.

No one reacts dramatically.

BROTHER JACK

After breakfast.

LEONARD

Why after breakfast?

BROTHER JACK

You are on eggs.

Leonard looks down the table.

LEONARD

All right.

Silas raises his board.

MARKET CONFIDENCE IMPROVING.

Leonard smiles.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - PRE-DAWN

Before the bell rings, Leonard sweeps alone.

The courtyard is quiet. No one watches.

A young VOLUNTEER crosses with a box and does not recognize him.

VOLUNTEER

Morning.

LEONARD

Morning.

The bell rings.

Leonard keeps sweeping.

FADE OUT.

END OF PART THREE

FADE IN:

INT. MONASTERY KITCHEN - EARLY MORNING

Leonard stands over a skillet of eggs with the concentration of a bomb technician.

Brother Jack slices bread. Miguel washes herbs. Silas watches Leonard from a safe distance.

LEONARD

How many?

BROTHER JACK

Thirty-two.

LEONARD

People?

BROTHER JACK

Eggs.

LEONARD

That was not my question.

BROTHER JACK

Then ask the people.

Leonard turns. The dining hall is filling.

LEONARD

Who wants eggs?

Every hand rises.

LEONARD

Of course.

He cracks another egg. Shell falls into the bowl.

Silas raises his board: DIVERSIFIED ASSETS.

LEONARD

You have been waiting all morning for that.

Silas nods.

INT. MONASTERY OFFICE - LATER

An old desk phone sits between Leonard and Sun Ho.

Leonard holds a handwritten number. His thumb hovers over the buttons.

SUN HO

The telephone is not offended by hesitation.

LEONARD

My attorney may be.

SUN HO

Then you have chosen an appropriate profession for him.

Leonard dials.

INT. LAW OFFICE - INTERCUT

A sleek conference room. NORA BENNETT, 50s, federal defense attorney, answers on speaker while two associates listen.

NORA

Leonard?

LEONARD

Yes.

NORA

Are you safe?

LEONARD

Define safe.

NORA

Not incarcerated. Not injured. Not speaking to the press.

LEONARD

Three for three.

NORA

Where are you?

Leonard looks at Sun Ho.

LEONARD

Somewhere quiet.

NORA

The FBI considers you a flight risk. The U.S. Attorney wants voluntary surrender by Friday.

LEONARD

What happens if I surrender?

NORA

You are arrested.

LEONARD

I was hoping for a more spiritual interpretation.

NORA

Then call a priest.

LEONARD

I have an abbot.

NORA

Good. Ask him whether obstruction is a sacrament.

LEONARD

I did not destroy records.

NORA

Your staff says you ordered them to delete draft statements.

LEONARD

Draft statements are not records.

NORA

That sentence alone costs five thousand dollars.

Leonard rubs his face.

NORA

I can arrange surrender. No cameras if we move quickly.

LEONARD

I need one day.

NORA

For what?

LEONARD

To finish something.

NORA

Leonard, your life is not a keynote. There is no closing story that fixes the room.

LEONARD

Tomorrow morning.

NORA

Nine o clock. Federal courthouse. Do not move again without telling me.

LEONARD

Understood.

NORA

And do not confess to monks.

LEONARD

They barely listen.

SUN HO

We listen.

NORA

Who was that?

LEONARD

My abbot.

NORA

Of course you have an abbot.

INT. MONASTERY OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

The call ends.

SUN HO

You will go tomorrow?

LEONARD

Yes.

SUN HO

Then today is today.

LEONARD

That sounds profound because you say it slowly.

SUN HO

It sounds obvious because it is true.

EXT. MONASTERY ROAD - MORNING

Jack and Owen inspect the washed-out crossing. Mud, branches and a collapsed culvert block the road.

OWEN

County says late afternoon.

BROTHER JACK

County said that yesterday.

OWEN

Government has a different relationship with afternoons.

Leonard approaches in work clothes.

LEONARD

Can we clear it ourselves?

BROTHER JACK

We can make it worse ourselves.

LEONARD

I need the road open by seven tomorrow.

OWEN

Then threaten it with litigation.

Leonard looks at the blockage.

LEONARD

What do you need?

BROTHER JACK

Hands.

LEONARD

I can organize hands.

BROTHER JACK

I meant yours.

EXT. MONASTERY ROAD - LATER

The community works in mud. Leonard hauls branches with Caleb, who has arrived in a borrowed pickup.

LEONARD

You found me.

CALEB

Jack called.

LEONARD

Jack has a phone?

CALEB

Apparently everyone has a phone except you.

LEONARD

Did Nora send you?

CALEB

No. Miriam did.

Leonard stops.

LEONARD

Is she coming?

CALEB

She said you need fewer witnesses and more truth.

LEONARD

That sounds like her.

CALEB

She also said you owe me an apology.

LEONARD

That definitely sounds like her.

They drag a branch aside.

CALEB

You said you made me.

LEONARD

I was angry.

CALEB

You were accurate about what you believed.

Leonard takes that in.

LEONARD

I was wrong.

CALEB

About me?

LEONARD

About what making someone means.

CALEB

That is almost an apology.

LEONARD

I am sorry.

CALEB

There it is.

They return to work.

INT. MONASTERY DINING HALL - AFTERNOON

Owen has converted one end of the table into a war room of paper ledgers, claim lists and calculators.

OWEN

The known recoverable assets total twenty-one million.

CALEB

Corporate accounts, real estate, equipment, licensing rights.

LEONARD

Sell everything.

OWEN

Everything owned by the company?

LEONARD

Everything owned by me.

CALEB

The penthouse?

LEONARD

Yes.

CALEB

The foundation art collection?

LEONARD

Yes.

OWEN

Your speaking catalog has value.

LEONARD

Sell it.

CALEB

Some of those talks are evidence.

LEONARD

Then charge admission.

No one laughs. Leonard does not either.

LEONARD

Create a restitution trust. Independent board. Priya chairs it if she will.

CALEB

She may refuse.

LEONARD

Ask her before I can change my mind.

OWEN

And your defense fund?

LEONARD

Nora can have the car.

CALEB

The one parked outside?

LEONARD

She will hate it. That is part of the fee.

EXT. MONASTERY GARDEN - AFTERNOON

Miriam enters through the garden carrying a small overnight bag.

Miguel notices her first.

MIGUEL

You are Miriam.

MIRIAM

How do you know?

MIGUEL

Leonard pulls weeds angrily when your name is mentioned.

MIRIAM

That does sound like him.

Miguel points toward the dining hall.

INT. MONASTERY DINING HALL - MOMENTS LATER

Leonard looks up and sees Miriam.

For once, he has no prepared expression.

LEONARD

You came.

MIRIAM

Caleb said you were surrendering.

LEONARD

Tomorrow.

MIRIAM

Good.

She sees the ledgers.

MIRIAM

What is this?

CALEB

Restitution plan.

MIRIAM

Whose idea?

LEONARD

Mine.

MIRIAM

Who gets to control it?

LEONARD

Not me.

Miriam studies him carefully.

MIRIAM

Then it may be a good idea.

LEONARD

That is the nicest thing you have said to me in months.

MIRIAM

Do not make me regret it.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - SUNSET

Leonard and Miriam walk slowly.

LEONARD

I kept thinking if I could explain it perfectly, nobody would hate me.

MIRIAM

Some people will hate you even if you explain it perfectly.

LEONARD

Helpful.

MIRIAM

Some will forgive you for reasons you do not deserve. That is not control either.

LEONARD

I do not know who I am without control.

MIRIAM

You are the person standing here without it.

They stop beside the broom leaning against the wall.

LEONARD

I used to think being useful was the same as being loved.

MIRIAM

You made usefulness expensive.

LEONARD

I know.

MIRIAM

Do you?

LEONARD

I am beginning to.

Miriam touches his muddy sleeve.

MIRIAM

Beginning is not nothing.

INT. MONASTERY CHAPEL - NIGHT

The community sits in silence.

Leonard sits beside Miriam. He does not fidget.

After a long while, Sun Ho speaks.

SUN HO

Tomorrow Leonard leaves us.

No reaction. No ceremony.

SUN HO

Tonight we practice remaining.

Silence returns.

Leonard looks around at Jack, Miguel, Owen, Silas, Caleb and Miriam.

He closes his eyes.

INT. GUEST ROOM - LATE NIGHT

Leonard folds the gray work clothes neatly.

He places the passport on the table.

Then the cash.

Then the photograph of himself and Miriam.

A soft knock.

LEONARD

Come in.

Silas enters and holds out his dry-erase board.

On it: YOU CAN LEAVE WITHOUT ESCAPING.

Leonard reads it twice.

LEONARD

Did Sun Ho tell you to write that?

Silas erases the sentence and writes: NO.

LEONARD

Jack?

Silas writes: ALSO NO.

LEONARD

You came up with it?

Silas writes: OBVIOUSLY.

Leonard smiles.

LEONARD

Thank you.

Silas nods, then adds: DO NOT QUOTE ME.

EXT. MONASTERY ROAD - DAWN

A county bulldozer clears the final mud from the crossing.

The road is open.

At the monastery, Leonard places his duffel bag in Caleb’s pickup.

BROTHER JACK

You forgot something.

Jack hands him the broom.

LEONARD

I am not taking a monastery broom to federal court.

BROTHER JACK

Then bring it back.

Leonard accepts it.

LEONARD

You knew I would return?

BROTHER JACK

No.

LEONARD

Then why say that?

BROTHER JACK

Hope is allowed to be wrong.

Leonard hugs Jack. Jack tolerates it.

MIGUEL

Do not lean on the tomatoes.

Leonard realizes he is crushing a plant and steps away.

LEONARD

Sorry.

MIGUEL

To the tomato.

LEONARD

I am sorry, tomato.

Silas raises his board: FIRST SINCERE PUBLIC STATEMENT.

EXT. MONASTERY ENTRANCE - CONTINUOUS

A distant engine approaches.

Then another.

Then many.

A news van rounds the bend.

Behind it: another van, two SUVs, a satellite truck and a swarm of cars.

CALEB

How did they find us?

Leonard looks toward the main building.

LEONARD

The phone call.

MIRIAM

Or the county crew.

OWEN

Or every person in America with a camera and no boundaries.

The convoy stops outside the monastery.

REPORTERS spill out. Cameras rise. Drones buzz overhead.

REPORTER #1

Leonard! Did you steal investor funds?

REPORTER #2

Are the monks hiding you?

REPORTER #3

Is this a cult?

Brother Jack looks at Sun Ho.

BROTHER JACK

We have had quieter Thursdays.

EXT. MONASTERY GATE - MOMENTS LATER

Leonard approaches the reporters. Miriam and Caleb stay behind him.

Microphones thrust through the open gate.

REPORTER #1

Why did you flee?

REPORTER #2

How much money did you take?

REPORTER #3

Is KarmaCoin a Ponzi scheme?

Leonard raises a hand. The old instinct returns. The crowd quiets.

He recognizes the feeling: control.

He lowers his hand.

LEONARD

I am surrendering this morning.

A frenzy of shouted questions.

LEONARD

I will answer through my attorney and in court.

REPORTER #1

Do you apologize?

Leonard looks at the cameras.

LEONARD

Yes.

REPORTER #2

For what exactly?

Leonard opens his mouth.

No slogan comes.

LEONARD

For telling people certainty was something I could sell them. For treating their trust like proof that I was right. For waiting until I was trapped to admit I was wrong.

The reporters go briefly still.

REPORTER #3

Did you commit fraud?

LEONARD

That is for the court.

REPORTER #3

That is not an answer.

LEONARD

It is the answer I have.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - CONTINUOUS

The media surge pushes through the open gate.

A cameraman steps into Miguel’s herb bed.

MIGUEL

No.

Miguel grabs the camera tripod and guides him back onto the path.

CAMERAMAN

Do not touch the equipment.

MIGUEL

Do not touch the basil.

A drone dips toward the chapel roof.

Jack throws a dish towel over it. The drone crashes into a rain barrel.

BROTHER JACK

Bird problem.

More vehicles arrive.

INFLUENCERS livestream themselves beside the sign.

INFLUENCER

We are literally at the secret crypto monk compound--

Silas steps into frame and raises his board: PLEASE LITERALLY LEAVE.

INT. ABBOT’S STUDY - MORNING

Leonard, Sun Ho, Miriam and Caleb watch the courtyard fill through the window.

CALEB

Nora says federal agents are twenty minutes away.

MIRIAM

Can we lock the gate?

SUN HO

It has no lock.

LEONARD

Why does a monastery gate have no lock?

SUN HO

It was built before television.

A reporter presses against the window.

REPORTER

Abbot Sun Ho! Are you harboring a fugitive?

Sun Ho closes the curtain.

SUN HO

Now it has a curtain.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - LATER

Chaos spreads.

Cables snake across walkways. Generators roar. Reporters shout live updates over one another.

A satellite truck blocks the delivery path.

A monastery cart loaded with soup cannot pass.

BROTHER JACK

Move the truck.

PRODUCER

We have a live window in six minutes.

BROTHER JACK

We have lunch in four.

PRODUCER

This is national news.

BROTHER JACK

This is soup.

Jack looks at Leonard.

BROTHER JACK

You brought them.

LEONARD

I did not invite them.

BROTHER JACK

You trained them.

Leonard sees it: hundreds of people waiting for performance.

EXT. MONASTERY STEPS - MOMENTS LATER

Leonard climbs the steps and faces the crowd.

LEONARD

Everyone, listen.

The courtyard quiets almost instantly.

Leonard feels the old power again.

LEONARD

Federal agents are coming. Until they arrive, nobody enters the chapel, garden, kitchen or residence buildings.

REPORTER

Who put you in charge?

Leonard looks at Sun Ho.

LEONARD

Nobody.

He steps down.

LEONARD

Jack, what needs doing?

BROTHER JACK

Lunch needs unloading. Storm debris needs clearing. Forty folding chairs are in the barn.

LEONARD

Good.

He turns to the reporters.

LEONARD

You want to stay on the property? Help.

PRODUCER

We are working.

LEONARD

So are we.

INFLUENCER

Is this mandatory?

LEONARD

No. The road is that way.

Silas raises his board: VOLUNTARY LIQUIDITY EVENT.

A few reporters laugh.

One young REPORTER picks up a fallen branch.

YOUNG REPORTER

Where does this go?

BROTHER JACK

Pile by the shed.

Another reporter grabs a soup crate.

Then a cameraman folds his tripod and lifts two chairs.

MONTAGE - THE COURTYARD CHANGES

A network anchor carries cabbages while still wearing an earpiece.

Two influencers sweep mud from the chapel steps.

A producer and Owen argue over the correct way to stack chairs.

Miguel directs three reporters transplanting crushed basil.

Silas assigns jobs using his board: CABLES. DISHES. STOP FILMING THE CHICKEN.

The chicken steals a microphone windscreen.

Brother Jack uses a satellite-truck dolly to move firewood.

For a strange half hour, a media siege becomes a work crew.

EXT. MONASTERY ROAD - LATE MORNING

Black federal SUVs appear at the bend.

The work stops.

AGENT HARRIS, 40s, steps out with several agents.

Leonard sets down the broom.

MIRIAM

You do not have to say anything else.

LEONARD

I know.

CALEB

Nora is meeting us at the courthouse.

LEONARD

Take care of the trust.

CALEB

I will.

Leonard turns to Sun Ho.

LEONARD

I am sorry I brought this here.

SUN HO

You brought yourself here. The rest followed.

LEONARD

Will you let me come back?

SUN HO

The road is open.

EXT. MONASTERY GATE - CONTINUOUS

Agent Harris approaches.

AGENT HARRIS

Leonard Rosenblatt?

LEONARD

Yes.

AGENT HARRIS

You are under arrest on a federal warrant.

She begins reading his rights.

Leonard places his hands behind his back.

The handcuffs close.

Cameras click from every direction.

Leonard looks toward Miriam.

LEONARD

I am sorry.

MIRIAM

Keep going.

Agent Harris guides him toward the SUV.

Leonard stops beside Brother Jack.

LEONARD

The broom.

BROTHER JACK

I will hold it.

LEONARD

I said I would bring it back.

BROTHER JACK

Then you will need to.

Leonard nods.

As the SUV door opens, a REPORTER shouts.

REPORTER

Leonard! Any final message to your followers?

Leonard turns.

LEONARD

Stop following me.

He gets into the SUV.

EXT. SUN RIVER MONASTERY - CONTINUOUS

The federal convoy drives away.

The reporters stand in sudden quiet.

Brother Jack looks over the courtyard: chairs half-stacked, soup crates open, mud everywhere.

BROTHER JACK

All right.

He claps once.

BROTHER JACK

Nobody leaves until the cables are rolled.

The reporters stare at him.

Silas raises his board: TERMS ACCEPTED BY REMAINING ON PROPERTY.

One by one, they return to work.

FADE OUT.

END OF PART FOUR

INT. FEDERAL COURTHOUSE - HOLDING ROOM - MORNING

Leonard sits alone in a gray suit without a tie.

No cameras. No assistants. No one feeding him names.

His attorney, ELAINE MORROW, 50s, practical and unsentimental, closes a thick folder.

ELAINE

The government will recommend forty-six months if the judge accepts the cooperation agreement.

LEONARD

You said thirty-six.

ELAINE

I said thirty-six was possible.

LEONARD

I surrendered voluntarily.

ELAINE

After hiding in a monastery.

LEONARD

I was reflecting.

ELAINE

You were a fugitive with vegetables.

Leonard looks toward the closed door.

LEONARD

How many people are outside?

ELAINE

Reporters? Hundreds.

LEONARD

Victims.

Elaine studies him.

ELAINE

Forty-two are speaking today.

Leonard's composure slips.

LEONARD

Forty-two.

ELAINE

You do not respond. You do not correct them. You do not explain intent.

LEONARD

What if something is factually wrong?

ELAINE

Then you experience being misunderstood without monetizing it.

INT. FEDERAL COURTROOM - DAY

The courtroom is packed.

Leonard sits at the defense table.

Miriam, Caleb, Martin, Priya, Brother Jack and Sun Ho sit in different rows, not together.

One by one, victims speak.

A RETIRED TEACHER grips the lectern.

RETIRED TEACHER

I lost thirty-two years of savings. You said people who doubted you were trapped in fear. I believed you because I was afraid of being afraid.

Leonard lowers his eyes.

A YOUNG FATHER steps forward.

YOUNG FATHER

I borrowed against my house. My wife begged me not to. I played your videos for her like evidence.

A COLLEGE STUDENT unfolds a trembling page.

COLLEGE STUDENT

I thought being careful meant I lacked courage.

Emma Collins, now thirteen, sits beside her father, DANIEL.

Daniel rises.

DANIEL

My daughter believed your books saved our family.

Leonard looks at Emma.

DANIEL

Maybe some of the words did help us. That made the rest worse.

Emma does not look away.

INT. FEDERAL COURTROOM - LATER

Leonard stands at the lectern.

The courtroom waits for a performance.

He unfolds a prepared statement.

Looks at it.

Then sets it aside.

LEONARD

I know how to make this sound meaningful.

A murmur.

LEONARD

I know how to turn failure into a lesson and shame into a brand. I know how to make an apology feel like something I am giving you.

He looks toward the victims.

LEONARD

So I will not do that.

He breathes.

LEONARD

I lied. Sometimes directly. More often by saying things I wanted to be true after I knew they were not. I made doubt feel like weakness because doubt threatened me.

Priya watches, unreadable.

LEONARD

People trusted me. I used that trust as collateral.

Leonard's voice catches.

LEONARD

There is no sentence that restores what was lost. There is no version of me becoming better that makes you lucky this happened.

He faces the judge.

LEONARD

I am guilty.

INT. FEDERAL COURTROOM - MOMENTS LATER

JUDGE HARRIET COLE, 60s, regards Leonard over her glasses.

JUDGE COLE

Mr. Rosenblatt, charisma is not an exemption from consequence.

Leonard nods.

JUDGE COLE

This court sentences you to forty-two months in federal custody, followed by three years supervised release.

Miriam closes her eyes.

Caleb exhales.

Martin stares at the floor.

Leonard turns before marshals take him.

Sun Ho gives him the smallest nod.

EXT. FEDERAL COURTHOUSE - DAY

A media storm waits outside.

Leonard exits in handcuffs.

Questions explode.

REPORTER #1

Leonard, do you still believe in karma?

REPORTER #2

Was the monastery a publicity stunt?

REPORTER #3

What do you say to investors?

Leonard stops at the transport van.

Every microphone leans toward him.

LEONARD

I already said it to them.

He gets inside.

INT. FEDERAL TRANSPORT VAN - MOVING - DAY

Leonard sits between two prisoners.

One recognizes him.

PRISONER

You're that motivation guy.

LEONARD

Formerly.

PRISONER

Tell me something motivating.

Leonard looks at the steel wall.

LEONARD

The ride ends.

The prisoner laughs.

INT. FEDERAL PRISON - INTAKE - DAY

Leonard's watch, belt, shoelaces and name are placed into separate bins.

INTAKE OFFICER

Occupation?

LEONARD

Author.

INTAKE OFFICER

Former occupation.

LEONARD

Author.

INTAKE OFFICER

Religion?

Leonard hesitates.

LEONARD

Complicated.

INTAKE OFFICER

Not a box.

LEONARD

None.

The officer marks the form.

INT. PRISON DORMITORY - NIGHT

Metal bunks. Fluorescent light. Forty men trying not to look afraid.

Leonard is assigned a lower bunk beside RAYMOND TATE, 58, broad-shouldered, quiet.

RAYMOND

You snore?

LEONARD

I've been told I breathe with conviction.

RAYMOND

You snore, I roll you over.

Leonard sets down his folded uniform.

RAYMOND

What'd you do?

LEONARD

Fraud.

RAYMOND

Everybody in here says fraud like it's a parking ticket.

LEONARD

What did you do?

RAYMOND

Murder.

Leonard freezes.

RAYMOND

See? Now fraud sounds friendlier.

INT. PRISON CAFETERIA - DAY

Leonard sits with a tray of gray food.

A younger inmate, DANNY, 24, recognizes him.

DANNY

My mom had your calendar.

LEONARD

I'm sorry.

DANNY

Why? She liked it.

LEONARD

I'm trying a broader apology policy.

Danny sits.

DANNY

You got any advice for court?

Leonard nearly slips into performance.

LEONARD

Yes.

He stops.

LEONARD

Tell your lawyer everything.

DANNY

That's it?

LEONARD

It would have saved me several years.

INT. PRISON LAUNDRY - DAY

Industrial machines roar.

Leonard folds uniforms under the supervision of MS. GARCIA, 40s.

MS. GARCIA

Corners together. Stack of twenty.

LEONARD

There might be a more efficient workflow.

MS. GARCIA

There might be a quieter inmate.

Leonard folds.

His first stack collapses.

Raymond, working nearby, rebuilds it in seconds.

RAYMOND

You're punishing the shirt.

Leonard looks at him.

LEONARD

Someone said that to me about a chair.

RAYMOND

Smart chair.

MONTAGE - LEONARD SERVES TIME

Leonard sweeps a corridor. A gust from an opening door scatters dust. He begins again.

He reads letters from victims without answering them.

He attends a financial-responsibility meeting and signs over book royalties.

He teaches Danny to read a legal notice, then lets Danny explain it back.

He loses a chess game to Raymond in seven moves.

He loses another in six.

He stops offering advice unless asked.

He writes letters to Miriam, then tears up the ones that sound like speeches.

He receives a postcard from Silas. On the front: a broom. On the back: STILL WORKS.

Winter becomes spring beyond barred windows.

INT. PRISON LIBRARY - AFTERNOON

Leonard shelves books.

Danny approaches holding Leonard's first bestseller, TURN THE KEY.

DANNY

This yours?

LEONARD

It used to be.

DANNY

Says your name on it.

LEONARD

Names survive things people don't.

DANNY

Is it any good?

Leonard takes the book, flips through it.

LEONARD

Some of it.

DANNY

Which part?

LEONARD

The parts I stole from wiser people.

Danny waits.

LEONARD

Chapter four isn't terrible.

INT. PRISON VISITATION ROOM - DAY

Miriam sits behind scratched glass.

Leonard picks up the phone.

LEONARD

You came.

MIRIAM

You asked once instead of twelve times.

A small smile.

LEONARD

How's the center?

MIRIAM

Busy. A lot of people need help sorting claims.

LEONARD

My royalties arrived?

MIRIAM

The receiver confirmed them.

LEONARD

Good.

Silence.

MIRIAM

You look different.

LEONARD

The lighting is punitive.

MIRIAM

No. Quieter.

Leonard looks down.

LEONARD

I used to think quiet meant nobody cared.

MIRIAM

What do you think now?

LEONARD

Sometimes it means they're listening.

Miriam presses her palm to the glass.

Leonard raises his, but does not quite touch it.

INT. PRISON CHAPEL - EVENING

A mixed group sits in a circle.

The chaplain has asked a question.

CHAPLAIN

Who are you when your title is gone?

Others answer.

INMATE #1

A father.

INMATE #2

A screwup.

RAYMOND

Still figuring it out.

The circle reaches Leonard.

LEONARD

Useful.

CHAPLAIN

That's what you do.

LEONARD

No. That's what I need to be.

A long silence.

LEONARD

I don't know who I am if nobody needs something from me.

RAYMOND

Lucky for you, nobody in here needs a keynote.

The group laughs.

Leonard laughs with them.

INT. PRISON DORMITORY - NIGHT

Raymond packs his belongings.

LEONARD

You're leaving?

RAYMOND

Halfway house.

LEONARD

You could have mentioned it.

RAYMOND

You would have made it emotional.

Raymond hands Leonard a chess knight carved from soap.

RAYMOND

You never learned patience.

LEONARD

I improved.

RAYMOND

You lost in twelve moves yesterday.

LEONARD

Personal record.

Raymond shoulders his bag.

RAYMOND

Don't turn this place into your redemption story.

LEONARD

Why not?

RAYMOND

Because the rest of us live here too.

Leonard nods.

LEONARD

Goodbye, Raymond.

RAYMOND

See you outside, Greaseball.

Leonard smiles at the nickname.

INT. PRISON RELEASE OFFICE - MORNING

A clerk slides Leonard's belongings across a counter.

Wallet. Old photograph. Gold watch.

Leonard leaves the watch in the tray.

CLERK

That's yours.

LEONARD

Donate it.

CLERK

We don't donate property.

LEONARD

Then lose it responsibly.

The clerk sighs and returns the watch.

EXT. FEDERAL PRISON - DAY

The gate opens.

Miriam waits beside an ordinary car.

No reporters.

Leonard steps outside carrying one small box.

LEONARD

That's it?

MIRIAM

Were you expecting a crowd?

LEONARD

No.

A beat.

LEONARD

Maybe six people.

Miriam takes the box.

MIRIAM

Sun Ho sent a message.

LEONARD

What did he say?

MIRIAM

'The floor remains concerned about his shoes.'

Leonard looks down at his state-issued sneakers.

LEONARD

These are innocent.

INT. MIRIAM'S CAR - MOVING - DAY

They drive through open country.

MIRIAM

You can stay with me while you get settled.

LEONARD

I was thinking about Sun River.

MIRIAM

To visit?

LEONARD

To ask.

MIRIAM

Ask what?

LEONARD

Whether the work is still substantial.

Miriam smiles.

EXT. SUN RIVER MONASTERY - AFTERNOON

The same weathered sign.

The same gravel road.

Miriam's car stops behind the same unmoving chicken.

Leonard gets out.

LEONARD

We meet again.

The chicken pecks his sneaker.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - MOMENTS LATER

Brother Jack, older but unchanged, crosses the courtyard carrying lumber.

Leonard stands with his box.

LEONARD

Jack.

BROTHER JACK

Lenny.

They look at each other.

Jack drops the lumber and embraces him.

Leonard holds on.

BROTHER JACK

You got skinny.

LEONARD

Federal cuisine.

Miguel approaches with a basket of tomatoes.

MIGUEL

You still drown plants?

LEONARD

Only emotionally.

Owen emerges from the kitchen.

OWEN

Restitution payments are arriving on schedule.

LEONARD

Hello to you too.

Silas steps forward and raises his board.

FIRST DAY RESUMED.

INT. ABBOT'S STUDY - LATE AFTERNOON

Sun Ho pours tea.

Leonard sits opposite him.

SUN HO

How long will you stay?

LEONARD

I don't know.

SUN HO

Better answer than last time.

LEONARD

I don't want to hide here.

SUN HO

Then do not hide.

LEONARD

I don't know what I am supposed to become.

SUN HO

Excellent.

Sun Ho slides a rag across the desk.

SUN HO

Your shoes.

Leonard looks down. Mud again.

He kneels and wipes the floor.

MONTAGE - A DIFFERENT LIFE

Leonard repairs chairs beside Jack, slowly enough not to punish them.

He waters tomato roots with Miguel.

He helps Owen maintain the monastery accounts, asking before changing anything.

He answers victim letters by hand. No slogans. No signatures larger than the page.

He travels with Miriam to financial-literacy workshops, sitting in the back until invited to speak.

When invited, he says, 'I am here to answer questions, not sell certainty.'

Caleb visits with boxes of records for the restitution trust.

Martin arrives carrying no tablet.

Priya reviews the books and finds them accurate.

Seasons turn.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - SPRING MORNING

A modest group of visitors gathers for a work retreat.

Leonard, in worn gray clothes, distributes gloves.

A WOMAN recognizes him.

WOMAN

You're Leonard Rosenblatt.

Nearby heads turn.

LEONARD

Yes.

WOMAN

My brother lost money because of you.

Leonard nods.

LEONARD

I'm sorry.

WOMAN

That's all?

LEONARD

No. But it is what I can say without asking you to make me feel better.

The woman studies him.

WOMAN

What are we doing today?

Leonard hands her a shovel.

LEONARD

Drainage ditch.

WOMAN

You doing it too?

LEONARD

Unfortunately.

INT. MONASTERY DINING HALL - EVENING

The community eats together.

Miriam sits beside Leonard.

MIRIAM

Sun Ho says the east cottage needs someone permanent.

LEONARD

Permanent is a frightening word.

MIRIAM

You sold eternity in twelve monthly payments.

LEONARD

Fair.

She takes his hand beneath the table.

MIRIAM

You don't have to earn every seat you're given.

Leonard looks around the table.

LEONARD

I'm learning.

EXT. MONASTERY COURTYARD - YEARS LATER - MORNING

The monastery is busier now, but still humble.

Leonard, grayer and peaceful, sweeps the courtyard.

The wind scatters leaves.

He smiles and begins again.

A black luxury SUV pulls up.

An ARROGANT NEWCOMER, 40s, expensive coat, wireless earbuds, steps out while speaking into his phone.

ARROGANT NEWCOMER

I need total privacy, organic meals, and reliable Wi-Fi. I'm here for a spiritual reset, not manual labor.

He ends the call and looks around.

ARROGANT NEWCOMER

Who's in charge here?

Leonard considers the question.

Sun Ho watches from the shaded walkway.

Brother Jack hides a smile.

Silas, older, raises his board.

Leonard picks up a second broom.

He silently hands it to the newcomer.

The newcomer stares at it.

ARROGANT NEWCOMER

What am I supposed to do with this?

Leonard points toward a pile of leaves.

A gust scatters them across the courtyard.

Leonard begins sweeping.

After a long beat, the newcomer does too.

FADE OUT.
